A family from the village of Sadmeli, a restaurant in Gallions Reach — and Georgian evenings in East London.
Where we come from
A Village Called
Sadmeli
Our family comes from Sadmeli, a small village in the Khvanchkara micro-zone of Racha, high in the mountains of western Georgia. It is the home of Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli — the grapes behind the famous Khvanchkara wine — and of a way of eating that is slow, generous and always shared.
For generations we have made wine the ancient way: grapes fermented on their skins in clay qvevri buried in the earth, with nothing added and nothing taken away. The name of our restaurant is the name of our village.

From Racha to
Gallions Reach
We opened the doors of Sad Meli on Silley Weir Promenade — a warm room with a wall of wine, green walls and Georgian script above the bar. Since then more than 400 guests have left us five stars on Google, and many have become friends.
We cook what we grew up with: pkhali ground with walnuts, khachapuri pulled from the oven, khinkali pleated by hand the moment you order. Nothing is rushed, and no one leaves hungry — that is the Georgian way.
